The Film
The Kid in Blue is an early-stage documentary that delves into the intricate tapestry of growing up Jewish in America. Told through the evocative lens of childhood memories and personal family diaspora stories, it offers an intimate exploration that will resonate deeply for both Jewish and non-Jewish audiences of varying demographics.
The project’s mission is to combat antisemitism through human and organic storytelling, sharing personal memories and reflections of the Jewish diaspora through unique viewpoints of growing up Jewish in America. Bridging cultural and political divides, the film will be a call to action for peace and respect.
The Kid in Blue is produced by Moonshot Creative Studios, LLC and directed by Heather Shaw, whose prior documentary "Telephone" (co-directed, co-produced with Krishna Washburn) was featured in the New York Times and screened across the country including Lincoln Center, NYU, Mill Valley Film Festival, New Museum Los Gatos, Carnegie Mellon University, San Francisco Dance Film Festival and more.
We are currently in pre-production for The Kid in Blue - stay tuned for updates!
Why this film? — Director’s Note
“With the significant recent increase in antisemitic incidents, I connected with friends from diverse Jewish and non-Jewish backgrounds, sharing the profound emotional impact I felt. While some outside of the Jewish experience initially struggled to understand, the gap in understanding began to close as I shared childhood memories, fears, values, and insights from my Jewish identity.
My ancestors fled Eastern Europe to South Africa due to pogroms and persecution, and later to the United States. The power of sharing family history and personal narratives is the inspiration behind the documentary. In a time marked by escalating division and polarization, the need to share these stories is critical. The current climate has sparked a deep call to action for me as a storyteller to create a film that serves as a platform for conversation, curiosity, and understanding, told in a human and non-polarizing way.”
